Fonterra Mainland cheese sleeve

Problem

Mainland cheese sleeve was a successful product; however it was labour intensive to pack, which impacted its profitability. The product was in need of automation. First attempts at automation did not yield the expected outcome so we were called in to help.

Solution

Building a whole new machine―or even a radical redesign―was out of the question; we had to work with what we had. To diagnose the problem our team developed a number of hypotheses whilst spending many hours observing the machine in action. Two simple design alterations enabled the pack to;

a.            Travel faster without failure through the production line and;

b.            Made the pack more consumer friendly with an easier opening tear tab.

Outcome

The automated packaging for Mainland cheese sleeve is now trouble free, the consumer has a pack that’s easier to use and Fonterra achieved these outcomes  without a major investment in new equipment.   Another Colorpak solution to help our customer stand out and stay ahead.
